Adapting the plant material to climate change

VITADAPT

Study plot planted in 2009, made up of 5 blocks of repetition of 52 French and foreign grape varieties (V. vinifera). The goals include:

  • Studying the behaviour of varieties from Bordeaux in a changing climatic context
  • Studying the adaptation possibility and the qualitative potential of other varieties that are less known in Bordeaux
  • Measuring any potential evolution in the quantity and quality of grapes in time
  • Recording and archiving the observational data of these 52 varieties
  • Establishing a chronology of the early development of these varieties and measuring their physiological response to droughts

All seven varieties included in the specifications of the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur AOC are studied on this plot.

GREFFADAPT

Study plot planted in 2015, made up of 55 rootstocks including 30 authorised in France and 25 foreign rootstocks. They were grafted with 5 emblematic varieties from the French vintage (Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot noir, Syrah, Ugni blanc). They were chosen to maximise genetic variability among the grafts while having signature varieties from great French wine-growing areas, both from a cultivated area point of view and a total production value point of view. The 275 combinations (rootstock/graft) thus obtained are organised in 3 blocks with 5 strains in each block. The aim is to determine the agronomical qualities of these rootstocks, most notably their adaptation to water scarcity.
